I’ve been meaning to do a makeup post for a while. I’m not into doing colorful make up looks but I’m always changing up my brown smokey eye and winged liner. I’ve been trying to perfect the winged liner look for the past six years. I’ve recently gotten into “baking” and color correcting.
Prep: I start out with Image Skincare’s sunscreen which is oil-free and perfect for acne prone skin (I only use it on my face and neck which is probably why my face is so much lighter than the rest of my body…). Then I dust on some of Too Faced’s “Primed and Poreless Pressed Powder” applied with a fluffy brush.
1. Foundation: I use three different shades of “Make Up Forever HD Foundation.” (Super aggressive, I know). I started doing this because my skin color changes so drastically every season. If I need more of the darker or lighter shade, I add it. I use the lightest shade in a triangle shape under my eyes, on my upper lip, upper neck area, and the top of my nose. The darker shades go everywhere else–this process is just like starting out contouring with your foundation. I use a wet beauty blender to dab on the foundation (don’t wipe it on). This gives a more airbrushed look that looks flawless in photos.
2. Color Correcting: This step isn’t essential unless you have ethnic skin which creates dark bags under your eyes. Since these bags have a blueish tone, the opposite end of the color wheel will “correct” it. This color is red/orange. Illamasqua’s “Cream Pigment” in emerge is ok; I’m still looking for a better one. I’ve heard that using a bit of a matte red lipstick works as well. Basically, I just dab a little on using my beauty blender. You can also use this on acne scars.
3. Concealer: I use the NARS radiant creamy concealer. I’ve tried the MAC, Benefit and YSL concealers but this one reigns supreme. I put some on underneath my eyes in a triangle shape, around the nose and laugh lines and on top of the nose and little between the brows. I’m only 21 but I’ve started to notice a loss of collagen in between my eyes (the dreaded elevens), so adding something to brighten up that area helps.
4. Baking: After blending the concealer, I immediately dip my beauty blender in the Ben Nye “Bella Luxury Powder” in “Banana” and put it (a ton) on areas I want to lighten: under the eyes, upper lip, and on top of nose. I keep the powder on for about 10 minutes while I either do my hair or brows. Then, I brush off the excess with a fluffy brush. You can use a large concealer brush to put on the powder instead of a beauty blender, but I found that this is easier since the sponge is already moist and picks up more product. After dusting it off, I apply a bit of MAC’s Studio Fix powder to the other areas of my face.
5. Brows: I’ve tried both Anastasia Beverly Hills’ Brow Wiz and Dipbrow but I’m currently using the Brow Wiz. I go back and forth on which is my favorite. I top it off with the clear brow gel. Regardless of which product I use, I still need the brow gel.
6. Contour: I bought the Anastasia Beverly Hills contour kit when there was only one shade (now called “light to medium”) and it works perfectly on my skin tone. One of the colors is very similar to the Ben Nye Banana powder so it can be used as a highlight on days where you don’t want to wait 10 minutes to “bake.” I apply the darker shades using an angled brush under my cheekbones, jawline, temples and the sides of my nose to give my face an overall thinner look.
7. Blush and Highlight: I use MAC’s “Gentle” blush on the apples of my cheeks with a fluffy brush. Women with my skin tone usually opt for a peach blush but I prefer pink ones. Then, I use Giella’s “Eye M Glam” highlighter on my cheeks and the top of my nose with a fan brush. It’s described as golden on the website but it also has a pinkish tone to it.
8. Eyeshadow: I’m always changing my smokey eye but right now I’m either using the original Naked palette or the Smashbox Masterclass Palette. I use a matte nude shade on my lid, a sparkly highlight for the inner corners and brow bone, and a mix of two brown and taupe shades for the crease. I don’t like any of the other Naked palettes–they’re too sparkly.
9. Eyeliner: My two favorite eyeliner products are the Illamasqua’s “Precision Gel Liner” and Marc Jacob’s “Magic Marc’er Precision Pen.” I’ve been using the gel liner recently because the application is more precise and thin. I apply it using the Make Up Forever Extra Fine Eyeliner brush. There are a ton of tutorials online but I start with the wing by making a line from the outer corner of my lash line out in the direction of my brows. I then bring it down back to the lash line. I use small strokes on the lash line for a thin, precise line that builds as it gets to the wing. This creates an illusion of a larger eye. I don’t like any other liquid liners because they dry shiny. This gel liner is dark enough to pass for a liquid liner and almost as unforgiving. Be sure to keep some q-tips on hand.

10. Lashes: I use Make Up Forever’s “Smoky Extravagent Mascara.” I have thin lashes and this is by far the best one. I also like this one by Too Faced as a second or third layer. Mixing mascaras leads to thicker and fuller lashes, if done properly with no more than three coats. If I’m using fake lashes, I’ll only apply one coat. Right now, House of Lashes’ “Siren” lashes are my favorite. I apply them using DUO’s clear lash glue.

11. Lips: My favorite part! I’ve been using all sorts of different brownish pink shades for a couple years now (ya, I called it before you did Kylie Jenner!) In the photos above, I’m wearing MAC’s “Whirl” lipliner all over my lips with NYX’s Soft Matte Lip Cream in 06 on top. I usually use Lime Crime’s Cashmere Velvetine, MAC’s “Modesty” or “Twig”. MAC’s “Stripdown” is my favorite lipliner. I’m wearing Whirl and Modesty in the photo right above.
I wore this wanna-be Chloé dress out last night to Perch and The Standard. I feel like a basic betch in it, but doesn’t everyone need one of those looks from time to time?
In other news, I slipped a disc in my back while running and I can’t really exercise for the next six weeks. I’ve made so much progress in terms of weight loss that this is kind of a setback. But it’s 70% diet 30% working out so TTYL chocolate crepes.
